Pen Singam - Review

June 04, 2010
It's an adaption of Kalaignar Karunanidhi's short story Surulimalai. Surya (Uday Kiran) is an upright and honest forest officer working in a forest range. He falls for Mekala (Meera Jasmine), the computer operator in his office after seeing her performing on stage as the fiery queen Velu Nachiar who stood up against the Portuguese. Singaperumal (Radha Ravi) leads the timber mafia who are cutting down trees in the forests, who locks horn with the hero.

Meanwhile Surya's best friend Nagendran (Richard) a self styled poet betrays his lady love Prabhavathy (Sudharsana Sen) after marrying her. And when Prabhavathy gets murdered, Surya is framed up. Surya's mother Chandramathi (Rohini) resigns her job as Judge to take up the case for her son as a lawyer and prove his innocence. Around the same time Mekala gets her IPS and is put in charge of the Prabhavathy murder, leading to a court room climax.

Though Karunanidhi has tried to inject a lot of current issue into the script like women empowerment, dowry deaths, how forests are being looted, the director fails to connect with today's audiences.

Uday Kiran and Richard are pure teakwood, while Meera Jasmine sleepwalks throughout the film. Vivek is just ok, with his usual one liner laced with politics. There are enough and more special appearances from Rambha, Lakshmi Rai, JK Riteesh and Lawrence. Deva's music is nothing much to talk about. Dispensable fare.
